Drunk Driving: Just About the Only Thing In Washington That Crosses Party Lines

What would politics be without boozy family members slamming into parked cars? Pretty vanilla.

Charlene Lugar, wife of Senator Dick Lugar, was taken to an adult detention facility at around 6:30 p.m. last night on DUI charges.

Here’s how Wonkette put it:

“It’s the holiday season, which means the Northern Virginia suburbs are going to be particularly deadly until January 3 or so, as Republican congresspeople and their drunken wives and rent boys wreak havoc on the icy suburban streets. Congratulations to Charlene Lugar, wife of Republican Senator Dick Lugar, for winning the “First of the Season” award by just crashing into a parked car, because she was (allegedly!) drunk.”

But she’s not the only one.

The second DUI of, what the Wonkette called, “Alco-holidays”, was given to Alexandra Kerry.

She was stopped at about 12:40 a.m. and brought to a Hollywood police station where she was booked and let out on $5,000 bail.

Gawker: These things come in threes, and we’re counting on the Kennedy family to step up to the plate.

South Carolina’s Shady Governor To Undergo Ethics Probe

A state ethics commission announced today that they have probable cause to investigate Mark Sanford on “several violations” that they will not disclose; but probably have something to do with the following:

According to the AP:

“the governor violated bans on using state airplanes for personal and political purposes; opted for expensive first-class or business-class seats – actions that apparently violated rules requiring lowest-cost travel; and failed to disclose on ethics forms flights he took on private planes owned by donors and friends.”

He is also at risk of being impeached for, what some SC state legislators characterize as, “bringing extreme dishonor and shame” upon the state of SC.

His wife, Jenny, has also made news with her endorsement of state rep. Nikki Haley for Governor. This is particularly interesting considering that Haley withdrew much of her support for Mark Sanford after news of his affair broke. Serves him right.

According to Furman University political scientist, Danielle Vinson:

“Some folks are questioning if (Haley’s) a credible candidate, but Jenny Sanford carries some weight. It sends a signal (to Sanford supporters) that you might not be wasting your vote.”

On a less serious note, Gawker credits Sanford with coining the best euphemism of the year when he told aides he was “hiking the Appalachian trail”.

More:
-They’re back! The most embarassing love letters. Ever.
-…on a classier, more wholesome note, some are suggesting that Jenny Sanford, a former Wall St. investment banker, may have a bright political future herself.
-Barbara Walters got the exclusive interview with Jenny Sanford that will air Dec 9
-Details of Mark Sanford’s ethics probe.

The Spitzer Files

Gawker has accessed emails (via NY’s open records laws) that were exchanged between the New York Times, Client no. 9’s Communications Director, Christine Anderson, and his Press Secretary Errol Cockfield.

There are 1,300 pages of communication that they are still sorting through; but the first part is shocking.

Spitzer’s staff had quite a bit of influence over the press–something to consider next time you pick up a copy of the New York Times.

Should reporters seek permission before they call sources? Should they fact-check with the subject of an investigative report? Does the fact that their reporters were running the story by Spitzer’s staff undermine their credibility?

Call me crazy, but I don’t think that’s what government watchdog style reporting is all about.
